By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. Hebrews 11:11

No unbelief made Abraham waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Romans 4:20-21

So many verses in the Bible talk about God’s faithfulness. But I wanted to zone in on these because I feel like the best way to reflect on God’s faithfulness is to look at the testimony of those who have known him longest.

Sarah and Abraham. God called them to step out in faith to found the family he would use throughout history to accomplish his purpose. At the ripe age of 75, Abraham brought his wife and nephew with him on a journey of thousands of miles to Canaan, where they would wait for another 25 years for God to give them their only son who would be the tangible evidence that God was keeping his promise.

In those years of waiting, they experienced God’s faithfulness. Yes, God did show his faithfulness by keeping his promise of giving Abraham and Sarah their son Isaac and making their family great, but that’s not the only way he was faithful.

God told Abraham he would be with him. He said that he himself was Abraham’s reward. And that is what Abraham and Sarah ultimately could testify to. Every day they lived they saw God’s faithfulness and grew closer to him. If someone makes you a promise, you need to have more than just their words to believe them. You need to trust their character.

If Abraham and Sarah believed that God was able to do as he promised in such a big way, it was because he showed them every day in little ways that he was faithful.

My grandma signs everything she writes with the quote, “God is faithful.” She has known God for years and years and can testify to his faithfulness. He is good. And he’s been good to her every day of her life and that has built trust that doesn’t waver into her heart. No matter what she faces, she knows God is going to be with her and she can move ahead in faith.

God is like that. When we say he’s faithful to do as he promised, it’s not just about the giant, hard-to-believe miracles. It’s the consistent, daily provision and companionship and forgiveness he gives us freely, without wavering. We can believe he is faithful in the big things because he leads us to trust him as he is faithful in the little things.
